Competition System

The 16 teams from Asia and Oceania will play the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers during six windows.

As the host of the World Cup’s Final Phase, the Philippines are already qualified, in addition to the seven spots reserved for the Asian qualifiers. These qualified teams will play in the 2023 edition of the World Cup that will take place in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

Japan is also qualified as host in virtue of its ranking, but takes up one of the available seven spots for Asia at the event.

The Philippines and Japan will play in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers First Round and Second Round, advancing to the next phase as automatically qualified. Indonesia’s guaranteed spot is subject to reaching the Quarter Finals of the FIBA Asia Cup. Six spots are therefore available for the remaining teams.

In the First Round, the 16 teams will be divided into four groups (A-D) of four. Each team will face the other three teams in their group on a home-and-away basis over the first three windows. Each team will play two games in each window. These windows will be in November 2021, February 2022 and June 2022.

The top three teams from each group will advance to the Second Round of the Asian Qualifiers. This group will join another three teams to form another group. Prequalified host teams Japan and the Philippines will take up one of the three spots in the group, regardless of their position within their group.

All teams will carry over the results from the First Round.

In the Second Round, each team will play home-and-away against the three teams from the other group over the final three windows. The Second Round windows will take place in August 2022, November 2022 and February 2023. Each team will play two games in each window. At the end of these additional six games per team, the top three teams in addition to the Philippines and Japan from each group will qualify to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. Should Indonesia also be guaranteed a spot, then only the best third placed team would qualify in addition to the top two placed teams from each group.

With the Asian Qualifiers running from November 2021 to February 2023 - and national sides playing home and away games across each of these event windows - This ensures there's regular and competitive national team games for players to play and for fans to experience from all around the world.

The qualification process follows the FIBA Competition System successfully used for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

·  1st Window: November 22 - 30, 2021

·  2nd Window: February 21 - March 1, 2022

·  3rd Window: June 27 - July 5, 2022

·  4th Window: August 22 - 30, 2022

·  5th Window: November 7 - 15, 2022

·  6th Window: February 20 - 28, 2023

The windows are where teams will play the qualifying games. Each of the six windows are nine days in length. Each team will play two games in each window, on a home-and-away basis.

At the end of the third window, the top three teams from each group progress to the Second Round. In the Second Round, the First Round Groups merge as follows to form a new six-team groups:

  1. A and C => E
  2. B and D => F

Tokyo The U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team (5-1) earned the USA’s fourth straight Olympic gold medal with a hard-fought 87-82 win over France (5-1) in the gold medal game on Saturday  while the Women on Sunday  had a huge size advantage as they  trounced host Japan 90-75 to win the gold medal and continue a string of unparalleled titles and victories at the Olympics  at Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.

In Men Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets) scored 29 points, including the USA’s last two free throws to help seal the win. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) added 19 points, and Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee Bucks) and Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) each contributed 11 points.   It was not always pretty, but in the end, the United States men’s basketball team ascended to the heights they were always expected to reach. Overcoming a slow start to the Olympic tournament,

The USA trailed 12-6 to start the game and was 0-for-8 from 3-point before gaining some momentum. With the USA down 12-8, Durant scored 10 straight points, including the USA’s first score from behind the arc, to give the USA an 18-15 lead. France tied it up with a 3-pointer, but LaVine made a free throw and Tatum sunk one from deep to put the USA up 22-18 at the end of the first period.

USA lead to 44-39 at halftime.

At the midway point, Durant already had 21 points, but the USA was getting outrebounded 23-14 as was still just 22.2% from 3-point (4-18 3pt FGs).

France came within two points at the start of the third, 46-44, but a 3-pointer from Lillard was followed by a score from Holiday and five points from Durant, and France called a timeout with the USA back up by double-digits, 56-45, at 6:25. France cut it back to six points out of the timeout, but the USA responded each time France threatened.

The USA and France previously met in the first game of Group A action on July 25, and France battled back from a seven-point deficit in the final 3:41 to take an 83-76 victory.

France came in to the Final with an Unbeaten record

In Women The U.S. has not lost at the Olympics since the Barcelona Games in 1992 — a remarkable stretch of 55 straight wins. This victory landed the U.S. its seventh-straight Olympic gold medal.

Led by veterans Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird, who each claimed their fifth gold medals (the first basketball players to do so), the team's players are a who's-who of WNBA stars including Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, A'ja Wilson, Tina Charles and Sylvia Fowles.

6.9’ canter playing for HoustonComets Texas   Brittney Griner made  an Olympic record in a Gold Medal game wound up with 30 points. A’ja Wilson scored 19 and blocked five shots. Breanna Stewart had 14 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks.

For Japan, Takada Maki had 17 points. Motohashi Nako, with that shoot-from-the-hip style, had 16. Machida Rui had eight points and six assists, deceptively low stats for such an impressive player.

Japan gets its first medal

The Japanese women's basketball team has been a force in Asia for decades but has not had much success on the global stage. This was just their fifth appearance at the Olympics, and prior to this year they had never finished higher than fifth in 1976 -- and even that is a little misleading considering there were only six teams in the tournament that year.

Coming into this tournament, they were once again not expected to be among the medals, especially with star forward Ramu Tokashiki out injured. In fact, coming into the final game of the group stage, it wasn't even a guarantee that they would advance to the knockout round. But they took care of business against Nigeria, which set up a remarkable run.

First, they stunned Belgium in the quarterfinals thanks to a game-winning 3-pointer by Saki Hayashi in the closing seconds. That set up a semifinal showdown with France, who they had already beaten in the group stage. The second meeting was not as interesting as the first, and Japan cruised to a 16-point win thanks to some strong 3-point shooting.

While the dream run came to an end against Team USA on Saturday, Japan still earned the silver medal. It's the first Olympic medal the country has ever won in basketball, and to do it at home only makes it more special.

In Women USA had no difficulty in beating Australia 79-59 and will meet Serbia who defeated China 77-70 while Japan with 16 seconds to go for the final whistle saki Hayashi made a step back 3 point shot making host Japan in to the semi final and will meet France who scrape past Spain 67-64

In  Men Kevin Durrant made all differences as team USA trailed Spain by as many as 10 points in the first half, but flipped the script in the third quarter thanks to 13 points from Nets’ scoring machine Kevin Durant who  finished the game with 29 points, continuing to extend his record as the leading scorer in U.S. Olympic men’s basketball history. On the Spanish side, Ricky Rubio’s 38 points was not enough to avoid his fourth consecutive Olympics with a loss at the hands of the United States. It was the most points scored by an individual against Team USA in the Olympics or any other major competition.

In Women the two matches were an awesome Japan victory over Belgium and France Win over Spain  It's a contest that generations will talk about - and not just by fans of Japan who celebrated their team making history with a first-ever Semi-Finals spot at the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.

Their 86-85 Quarter-Finals triumph over Belgium was a game for the ages. An epic, a  classic. It came only 48 hours after a question had been posed about whether a beautiful basketball blueprint for the women's game had already been laid out in Tokyo? The answer was an emphatic yes as Japan and Belgium served up one of the greatest women's games of all-time - or at the very least, within an Olympic context.

There were 13 lead changes and the score was tied seven times. Most neutrals were probably praying for overtime, maybe a double, triple or quadruple - nobody wanted the fun to end. Japan made a comeback in the last minutes, capitalizing on an unsportsmanlike foul and some amazing three-pointers to get the job done. Then Saki Hayashi drilled the killer blow.

That dagger was sourced as assist number 14 from the hand of Rui Machida, as the guard passed a jaw-dropping 51 tournament assists in just four games. Yuki Miyazawa was also superb and dropped seven shots from downtown, while 'Captain Fantastic' Maki Takada shot the lights out, too, with 19 points.

Contrasting emotions were triggered on the buzzer as Belgium missed a shot to snatch the win. It laid bare the raw beauty and cruelty of sport in such pivotal moments. The joy of an entire nation erupted for the Olympic hosts. A few metres away, the Belgian Cats were heartbroken as their stirring debut at the Games ended with a gut punch.

They've done it! Gabby Williams runs away from contact to let the time run out, France protect their three-point lead, advance to the Semi-Finals, celebrate a memorable win over their arch-rivals!

It doesn't get any better than this - Marine Johannes was the hero, banking in her floater to make it +3 with 23 seconds left, releasing the ball with 0.1 on the shot clock, beating the buzzer and beating the ideas of the Spanish comeback, too.

Johannes finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a crazy +/- because France were +16 with her on the floor. Nobody else was over +6 in her squad!

Huge contribution by Gabby Williams, 11 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and a pair of fouls drawn late in the game, including Alba Torrens' fifth.

Astou Ndour had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Spain, Maite Cazorla came up big in the fourth for 12 points, but did not come close to tying the game on her last three-point attempt with three seconds left to play.

What a day...
