For 26-year-old Amjyot Singh, the cricketer-turned-basketball superstar from Chandigarh, the moment was at the NBA G-League Draft on October 21, when his name was selected by the Oklahoma City Blue. A week later, he donned the jersey and stepped on the court for the Blue, officially joining the select club of Indians in the NBA’s minor league.

For 24-year-old Jeena Scaria, the former high-jumper from Kerala who now jumps high on the basketball court, the moment was Puducherry on January 14 last year, when time expired on Kerala’s 68-59 victory over Telangana and secured her state’s first Senior Nationals title in over thirty years. Scaria, dominant throughout the tournament, was her team’s unofficial MVP in this triumph.

Singh and Scaria are two basketball maestros in their prime, arguably the best male and female basketball players in the country right now. It was only right, then, that on one of the biggest nights in India sports, the two were honoured for their memorable performances over the past year.

Basketball honours were handed out for the first time at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA-2018) on Monday. Singh was named the Basketball Player of the Year by the jury’s choice, and Scaria the Basketball Player of the Year by popular choice. Both players were in attendance at the gala event in Mumbai on Monday, among a number of India’s top athletes. Badminton star Kidambi Srikanth claimed the highest honour of the night as India’s 2018 Sportsman of the Year.

Over the past year, Amjyot Singh’s crowning achievement was to become the second Indian (after Satnam Singh) to make it to the NBA’s G-League with the Oklahoma City Blue in late October. The sharp-shooting 6-foot-8 forward has seen his role grow with the Blue over the past few months and has taken a step closer to the NBA than any Indian citizen before him. Back home, Amjyot continued to be a lynchpin for India’s national team. He was India’s captain at the FIBA Asia Cup and finished the tournament leading the team in points (13.0) and assists (4.3). He was also India’s top player at other international trips to the William Jones Cup and the BRICS Games.

Jeena Scaria took centre-stage for her home state when she led Kerala to their first Senior Nationals gold medal since the mid-eighties. She was one of India’s top players in the squad that won Division B at the FIBA Asia Women’s Cup in Bengaluru in July. She was also part of India’s 3×3 team which made it to the semi-final of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup in Mongolia in late October.

Both players will now hope to script another memorable year in 2018. Singh continues to earn bit minutes for the Blue and is growing more comfortable in the league with each passing game.

Later this year, India will hope that he returns to the national team for a number of important tournaments, including the Common Wealth Games in Australia, FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Syria and Jordan, and the Asian Games in Indonesia. Scaria will be counted on to be a leader for India’s Women’s team at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, too.

This honour should boost the confidence of both these talented players so they can elevate their game to an even higher level over the next few years.

Keralites Shine for other States
2018 Senior National Basketball Championship for Men and Women at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday saw hosts Tamil Nadu (men)Under Serbian coach Milan Opacic and Indian Railways (Women) after a gap lifted championship trophies with victories over Services and Chhattisgarh respectively.

The 68th edition of Senior National, organized by the Tamil Nadu Basketball Association (TNBA) and the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), is India’s most prestigious basketball championship. The Championship featured the best basketball talent from 31 men’s and 26 women’s teams from Indian States and Union territories.

For a major stretch in the past decade, Indian Railways were nearly untouchable at the Senior Nationals, seemingly winning the tournament every year. Their reign at the top was finally stopped by Chhattisgarh who beat Railways in the 2014 last Year by Kerala. The two teams squared off at the final once again on Wednesday, The Railways teams this time came with a much more preparations with more than two months preparations led 43-33 at halftime, and then raced off in the second half to a comfortable 100-71 victory on the back of captain Navaneetha PU (30) and veterans Renjini peter with 19 and Anitha with 12 points and Sruthy Menon contributing 14 points for the victory . Chhattisgarh depends mainly on India’s tallest women’s basketball player 7 ft 2 inches Poonjam Chaturvedi, as she scored 27 for Chhattisgarh in the loss, Anju Lakra also scored 17 against her former team.

In men Division Tamil Nadu, Railways, Services all came with much-prepared camps The Tamil Nadu came with a 45-day camp, under the watchful eyes of head coach Milan Opacic and assistant coach Aleksandar Virijevic from Serbia. The team which played a disciplined one have improved a lot and have adapted to different game styles and game sense. The Indian Railways who also had more than two Months of Preparation and has paid the dividends as they finished up the third spot and has beaten Punjab who had a strong line up on the cards with NBA draft Satanam Sing , T J Shahi Jagdeep Deep,Arsh Preeth etc and services which was relegated to level 2 last year came with a much prepared outfit with Months and Months-long camps.

The Men’s final was a closer affair, pitting the well-prepared host team Tamil Nadu against the old heads from Services., expectations were high for TN to defend their home court. The teams went back and forth in the first half and TN held only a slim 41-40 lead at halftime. After the break, however, TN’s finally began to create some separation against their gritty opponents and pulled away to win 94-86. International forward Rikin Pethani scored 25 for the winning side and Justin added 16. The veteran duo of Joginder Singh (23) and Narender Grewal (20) led Services in the loss.

Dominance of Punjabi’s at the National
Even though Punjab a strong team of cards but never play to the expectations but in Men Punjab players show their dominance Satnam and Arshpreet, for Punjab Palpreeth, Gagandeep for railways Yadwiner and Arjun Singh for Utharkhand

The absence of superstars Amjoth and Amarjoth who are doing their duties abroad for Professional clubs and Injuries to Vishesh and Trideep had the bad patch of the Tournament.
Malayalee Dominance in Women
Kerala Players playing for other states also made a impact in this championship The evergreen Renjini Peter and Sruthy Menon for railways Roshini and Priyanka Prabhakar for Karnataka Nivyaraj for West Bengal all dominated the women group while Men also saw Muralee Krishna and Anoop for Utharkhand, Jijin and Manu for Karnataka Issac for Services all played a stellar role for their respective states

With clinical brilliance, India’s under-16 men’s squad made no mistake as they blew past their opponents to win the 2nd South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal, held from September 5-9. The triumph helped India showcase several of the country’s exciting new basketball talents and secured the team’s qualification for the larger challenge ahead: The FIBA Asia U16 Championship.

Held at Kathmandu’s Dashrath Rangshala Stadium, the tournament was organized by the Nepal Basketball Association and included hosts Nepal, India, Maldives, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. India sent out a strong 12-man roster, coached by Vibhor Bhriguvanshi, from Uttar Prdesh and Assited by Keralite  Babu Davis

India started the tournament in the most dominant fashion possible, demolishing the Maldives squad 152-17. India led 67-9 at halftime, went on a 49-2 run in the third quarter, and finished off the game with a 135 point victory. Rising stars Prince Pal Singh (31), Harshwardhan Tomar (20), and Binod Rajak (20) all contributed in this unreal scoreline.

India continued their hot streak on Day 2 against Bangladesh. Four Indian players scored in double-digits, led by Priyanshu’s 32, in a comfortable 83-64 win. This was India’s closest-margin of victory, and Bangladesh showed real life in the first half, but the Indian continent proved to be too strong after the break.

India faced hosts Nepal next, and was unstoppable once again, mostly because Nepal had no answer for the post-dominance of 6-foot-8 center Prince Pal Singh. Prince Pal dropped 45 points and Prince Jerome Scoring 14 points on the day to help India to a 106-39 victory. Abhishek Singh scored 20 for Nepal in the loss.

On Saturday, India put on the finishing touches to their campaign, blowing past Bhutan to a 131-50 victory. Seven Indians scored in double digits include Prince Pal (20), Rajak (20), and Prashant Tomar (16).

Prince Pal Singh, one of the rising stars in Indian basketball, was named the tournament’s MVP. India won every game by an average margin of over 75 points each. Players like Binod Rajak and Priyanshu also showed their potential. While Varanasi-born coach Vibhor Bhriguvanshi – elder brother of national team star Vishesh Bhriguvanshi – will be overjoyed with his first major international coaching experience.

India will now prepare for the FIBA Asia U16 Championship, set to be held in Malaysia later this year. Korea won the 2015 edition of this tournament in Indonesia, while India dropped to 13th place.
