Talking about her height, Patel stresses on its disadvantages. “She cannot dribble that much as the ball won’t bounce up till her desired level. She will have to bend down to move along with the ball.”

Rajesh Patel was the man who spotted her from the. National Women’s Games in Chhattisgarh (2010). She was 15 that time and was 6 feet 5 inches tall.“Impressed with her height, I brought her to Bhilai Poonam stays along with 20 other players.

“I don’t have any favourite basketball player. Not even from NBA. A stellar show by Vishesh Bhriguvanshi helped ONGC (Dehradun) stop a spirited IOB (Chennai) in the men’s final of the Federation Cup basketball tournament here on Monday.

Bhriguvanshi (20 points, 9 rebounds) took over late in the third-quarter just as IOB (Chennai) was beginning to get into the groove. With IOB up 53-51, Bhriguvanshi converted two exceptional layups in transition, and from this point on, ONGC never lost faith.

The first 10 minutes, however, witnessed one-way traffic.

Troubled by Yadwinder Singh’s energetic defence, IOB stared at a huge 27-5 deficit at the end of the first-quarter, but staged a valiant comeback to narrow the lead to 31-26 at half-time.

After the restart, both teams ran neck-and-neck, before Bhriguvanshi carried ONGC to a fourth-straight Federation Cup title.

In the women’s section, an all-round show from Kerala took the side past Chhattisgarh.

Pratham Singh was the only player able to penetrate and finish, scoring all of his team’s 6 first quarter points. Down 27-6 entering the second quarter, IOB quietened ONGC by going on a scoring run of their own, led by Pratham Singh and forward Aravind Annadurai. Pratham found his touch from long range in the second quarter, knocking down a couple of triples, while Aravind operating in the paint for his buckets. IOB closed down ONGC’s margin only to 5 points at the end of first half. The veterans played their part for IOB in the third quarter, keeping them in the contest. Guard Hareesh Koroth came alive knocking down a tough double-pump jumper, followed by a big triple. Senior forward Mihir Pandey (10 points) showed his dexterity in the low post scoring a couple of baskets to cut ONGC’s lead. IOB went on a mini-run with Pratham getting to the basket a couple of times on and-1 finishes to give IOB their first lead of the game. But ONGC matched IOB’s scoring in the third quarter, led by Vishesh’s strong drives to the basket. Point guard Riyazuddin hit a timely 3-pointer, while Yadwinder Singh’s aggression in the post yielded success.

In the final period, with IOB down by 4 points, IOB’s big men Mihir Pandey and Aravind Annadurai played the low post-high post game, with Aravind (13 points) finishing off nice feeds from Mihir. Pratham Singh was emphatic in his penetration and drawing fouls, but his outside shooting was off the mark, which deeply hurt IOB but in transition ONGC, Vishesh kept pushing the tempo, using his athleticism to finish strong. Yadwinder’s play in the fourth quarter proved to be the X-factor today, as he knocked down surprising deep jumpers. ONGC pulled away to establish a 10-point lead with under 5 minutes of play left where IOB’s offensive troubles continued in the final minutes. Trideep Rai had a late 3 pointer and Riyaz Uddin two late transition buckets sealed the deal for ONGC as they blew the game wide open and registered a 73-57 victory.

In Men semi Final IOB Chennai will take on Vijaya Bank Bangalore while ONGC will Meet Army Reds Maharashtra needed a huge win against favourites Kerala to stand a chance of advancing to the semi-finals But all hopes that Maharashtra had been dampened right from the first quarter with Kerala racing away to a 24-10 lead after 10 minutes of the game. Kerala’s best player and go-to scorer Jeena PS got to the basket with ease scoring 26 points to go with 10 rebounds. Kerala centre Stephy Nixon also had a good outing with 14 points and Rojamol also Contributing 15points while Anjana came up with 9 points and 5 assists all these from KSEB contributed ensuring that Kerala maintained, at least, a 15-point lead for the rest of the game. For Maharashtra, Manisha Dange came with 21 points and Malayalee International of Maharashtra Shruthi Menon contributed 20 points Kerala team id Mix of College and Professionals 6 from college other from KSEB (4)& Kerala Police(2) There was little bench contribution for Maharashtra, while Kerala displayed their deep bench strength as 23 points coming from their reserves. Kerala Police team who mad their exit from the Championship ended up with a lone victory over Goa Don Bosco Oratory club with the score 64-38 Karnataka and Delhi faced each other later in an inconsequential match with both teams knocked out of contention for the semifinals. As Karnataka won with 45-31 lastly men’s game of the day saw home team Don Bosco Oratory, Goa (DBO) losing their fourth and final game of the tournament against the mighty Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai 63-38 victory.

Defending champions ONGC, Dehradun took on a dangerous Army Red side, featuring prominent players from the Services team that won the Senior Nationals this year. The game turned out to be closer than expected, with Army Red eager to prove their mettle and pull off an upset. Forward Ramesh Kumar went to work in the post finding the bottom of the net with his baby hooks and turnaround jumpers. Athletic guard Mayur Bhat was also aggressive in the first half penetrating the ONGC defence to finish at the basket or create opportunities for his teammates. Both Bhat and forward Jairam Jat, who helped to stretch the floor for Army, were knocking down timely triples to stay neck-and-neck with ONGC.

As usual, Vishesh Bhrighuvanshi (18 points) was ONGC’s go-to scorer pushing the tempo and finishing in transition, while fellow international Yadwinder hustled his way to 8 points. Veteran guard Riyazuddin (17 points and 10 rebounds) provided the offensive spark for ONGC, with his assertive drives to the basket and getting to the free throw line. But ONGC was cold from 3-point range today. Shooting guard Trideep Rai made just one out of his eight attempts while Vishesh was unable to connect on all four of his 3-point shots. ONGC’s shooting troubles kept Army in the contest as the game went down to the final minutes. But too many turnovers (22 in the entire game) proved disastrous for Army leading to transition buckets for ONGC in the dying minutes. Former India player Mohit Bhandari came off the bench for ONGC to knock down a crucial late triple that sealed the deal for his team and ending Army’s campaigns.

Pune, 19th February 2016:Defending Champions Chennai Slam defeated Hyderabad Sky 83-68  while Bengaluru beast coached by Prasanna Jayasankar defeated Pune Peshwas on the home court 85-78 in the  second day of the  United Basketball Alliance (UBA) Pro Basketball League Season 2 at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in the city.

Victory2

UBA Chairman Tommy Fisher (centre) in conversation with Actors Sana Khan (left) and Santosh Shukla

“I’m enjoying myself here. Basketball is an amazing sport and God willing, this UBA Season 2 will be a big hit, and there will be more seasons to come!” said Mr Santosh Shukla, actor and celebrity Big Boss contestant. Ms Sana Khan, Indian actor, model and dancer was also present and wished all eight teams the very best.

In the first match Last year’s runners-up Pune Peshwas had their opening game of Season 2 against Bengaluru Beast in front of their home crowd. Coach Nandu Metra returns to the Pune side this year along with his sons Arjun and Ajinkya. The Peshwas’ new backcourt this season consists of former India internationals Narender Grewal from the Services and hometown boy, Siddhanth Shinde. Centre Ravi Kumar (from Tamil Nadu) joins the Pune starting five and Pune also has the services of backup centre and junior India player Gaurav Ohlen.

For Bengaluru, Railways player Somveer and forward Manjeet give the Beast much-needed size in the frontcourt that was missing last season. Raghuram (from Tamil Nadu) is their starting point guard along with starters from last season Kaife Zia and Visu Palani.

Victory1

Bengaluru Beast centre Somveer attempts a layup against Pune Peshwas (1)

Both teams looked evenly matched to begin the game. Pune ran their offence through their experienced centre Ravi Kumar, who put in work in the post and provided the Peshwas with the early offensive punch. The backcourt of Siddhanth Shinde and Narender Grewal worked well together with the two guards playing off each other and creating opportunities for their big men to score. However, Ravi Kumar had a tough time on the defensive end guarding Bengaluru centre Somveer, who had an excellent game showcasing his bag of tricks in the post. He even showed off his handles running the floor and finishing coast-to-coast or dishing to his teammates for easy transition buckets.

The game was neck-and-neck throughout with multiple lead changes in the contest. Both teams traded buckets in the second half with little to separate the two sides. Pune’s Narender Grewal (21 points) and Bengaluru’s Visu Palani (17 points), both ‘one-handed shooters’, were involved in a shootout in the third quarter draining jumper after jumper. Towards the end, with little over three minutes of play left in the contest, both teams were tied at 74 apiece.

The last few minutes of the game were a test of nerves and experience. Bengaluru, led by their experienced point guard Raghuram, kept their composure and executed down the stretch. Crucial offensive rebounds and second chance shots by Bengaluru gave them a slim 4-point lead with a minute of play left. The Beast staved off the Peshwas’ comeback attempt in the final minute and closed out the game 85-78 to register a victory in their opening game.

Victory3

Ashutosh of Chennai Slam drives against Edwin of Hyderabad Sky

The second match of the day defending champions Chennai Slam, the team that won the inaugural edition of the UBA Pro Basketball League, had its first game of Season 2 today against Hyderabad Sky. Chennai retained their core lineup from last season of point guard Chukwunanu Agu (from Nigeria), shooting guard Carmel and captain Aditya Biswas. Their frontcourt has been shored up this year with the addition of centre Gopal, who is a big body on the inside, along with forward Ashutosh Rai from the Services.

Hyderabad Sky, on the other hand, have a completely revamped starting lineup consisting of the MVP of the recently concluded Senior National Basketball Championship and India international Joginder Singh at the point guard position, leading the team. Joining him in the starting lineup today were Nigerian centre Edwin, who played in the recent south zone inter-university final for SRM University, Chennai, guard Himanshu Jangra, Indian-origin Australian baller Mahesh Padmanabhan and forward V. Kumar.

The champs Chennai seemed to have a familiar case of a championship hangover in the beginning of the game today. They were struggling to find the bottom of the basket, with below average shooting from the field. Despite playing for the first time at a competitive level together, the Hyderabad Sky starting lineup looked like seasoned regulars to begin the game. Joginder coordinated the offence well in the initial minutes, as Sky penetration and ball movement to get open shots. Indo-Australian combo guard from the Sky, Mahesh, impressed in the early going, creating open shots for his teammates, knocking down jumpers and driving to the basket. Sky guard Himanshu Jangra also contributed with his aggressive style of play. Chennai looked out of sync in the first half with too many isolation plays and tough shots clogging their offensive rhythm.

However, as with any championship calibre team, Chennai Slam kept themselves in the contest managing to trail by only 3 points at halftime. The game turned out to be a tale of two halves, as Chennai came out storming in the third quarter. Point guard Agu found his touch from long range along with Chennai’s sixth man Vignesh Prabhu who drained three shots from behind the arc and ending up with 13 points. Chennai started moving the ball more and finding easy buckets for their big guys in the paint. Versatile forward Ashutosh Rai had a great debut for the Slam, ending up with 27 points, which included a number of open jumpers. Centre Gopal also made his presence felt in the paint with 19 points in the contest.

On the defensive end, Agu made life difficult for Sky point guard Joginder Singh who had an off day shooting-wise. Slam outscored Sky 26 to 9 in the third quarter and set the tone for the rest of the game. The Sky did manage to go on a mini-run at the end of the third quarter, fueled by Mahesh’s back-to-back three-pointers, to cut the lead down to 5. But Chennai stepped on the gas in the fourth and clamped down on the defensive end to close out the game at 83-68

Ms Urvashi Rautela, upcoming Bollywood actor, was also present for the second game of the day that is between Mumbai Challengers and Haryana Gold. . “UBA is providing an excellent opportunity to all the players out there. I am a national level basketball player myself, and all you guys are seriously amazing,” said Ms Rautela, encouraging all the participants.

Addressing the gathering, Ms Mahajan said, “I’m really grateful to UBA that you have come here in India to support the sport. We need strength for basketball because we have amazing players in India who want to shine and who want to well for basketball. We will grow the sport together from U13 to seniors,” said Ms Poonam Mahajan, BJP Member of Parliament and President of Maharashtra State Basketball Association, one of the chief guests of the occasion.

“Basketball is one of the most exciting sports. It is ultimate when it comes to physical fitness and strength. When I came to hear that there is this new league, seeing the people associated with this league, it is unbelievable. Mr Fisher who was sitting next to me, I think he was actually playing the game even while sitting there. I’m sure it looks awesome on television. It is a question of time before basketball catches up with our favourite sport-cricket. What is interesting and beautiful about this league is that it is not about the teams, owners or money, it is first and foremost about the sport of basketball,” said Mr Shetty.

Punjab-Steelers'-point-guard-Kuldeep-Singh-in-action-against-Delhi-Capitals

Punjab Steelers’ point guard Kuldeep Singh in action against Delhi Capitals

The opening game on the first day of the second season was a match between north Indian strongholds, Punjab Steelers and Delhi Capitals. With a whole host of new players on each of the franchises this season, both teams had rejigged starting lineups from last season. Punjab’s star player and international forward Gurvinder Gill returns this time for his home team along with point guard Tita Singh. Punjab regular at the national championships, Amrit Pal Singh, joins Kuldeep in the starting backcourt along with rookie forwards Kaushal (from Karnataka) and Keshav (from Kerala) in the starting lineup.

For the Delhi Capitals, starting point guard Sachin Sharma returns to orchestrate the offense. He has a lot of new offensive weapons around him this year with his starting backcourt mate is former India player Vinay Kaushik, while ex-India player Ajay Pratap Singh and players from the services Ramesh and Smithin Settu (keralite)comprise the starting frontcourt.

Delhi started off the game well, with forward Smithin Sethu showcasing his mid-range game. He knocked down mid-range jumpers in the post and got to the foul line in the first quarter, quickly putting up double digits in scoring. His teammate guard Vinay Kaushik helped to add to Delhi’s lead with three 3-pointers in the first quarter. On the other hand, his teammate Delhi’s centre Ramesh struggled to keep up with Punjab centre/ forward Gurvinder Gill. After conceding a 7-point lead in the first quarter to the Delhi team, Punjab surged ahead in the second quarter, thanks to Gurvinder who impressed with an array of different moves in the post

Entering the second half down by 7 points, the Delhi Capitals changed their defensive strategy against Gurvinder, giving him more space and daring him to shoot. It proved effective for the Capitals as they clamped down on Gill’s scoring and Punjab had to rely on their other players for offensive. But, apart from Amrit Pal Singh (19 points), Punjab had little contribution from their other players. The Delhi Capitals on the other hand found their shooting touch in the second half connecting from the inside and the outside. Sachin Sharma and forward Ajay Pratap Singh connected on crucial 3-pointers for Delhi while their centre Ramesh and forward Settu (20 points) found their way to the basket in the paint. Vinay Kaushik was also an offensive juggernaut for the Capitals putting up 19 points shooting almost 50% from the field. Capitals coach Mukesh Bishnoi credited the defensive aggression in the second half for his team’s victory.

In the end, Delhi Capitals cruised to a 69-57 victory taking the opening game of the UBA Pro Basketball League Season 2.

After the opening game action between Delhi and Punjab, last year’s semi-finalists Haryana Gold took the court to face the least successful team in the first edition of the UBA Pro Basketball League, the Mumbai Challengers. As with every team this season, both rosters sported a fresh appearance. Haryana Gold have the services of two new point guards, Ashiv Jain and Sanjeev Kumar, to replace their point guard last season: Railways player Himanshu Sharma. Being products of the IMG Academy in Florida, USA, both Ashiv and Sanjeev were rearing to put their talents on display. Guards Birender Singh and Vikas Kumar were retained in the Gold side from last year. In the frontcourt, centre Jaskaran Singh joins the team along with forward Deepak Rathee. Legendary former India women’s player Shiba Maggon is coaching the Haryana Gold side.

Mumbai’s star scorer Karan Pal Singh blows past two Haryana defenders

For the Mumbai Challengers, their top scorer in Season 1, Karanpal Singh, returns to the team. He is joined in the starting lineup by youngster Prudhvi Reddy (from Telangana) at the point guard position along with Punjab players Ranbir Singh and centre Gagandeep Singh. The fifth cog in their lineup is former India international forward Jagdeep Singh Bains, who is making a comeback to competitive basketball after a long layoff.

Haryana Gold began the game hot, with an 8-0 lead coming out of the gates. But Mumbai overcame their sluggish start with a point guard change, benching Prudhvi Reddy and bringing on backup Surender Hooda, who did a better job of taking care of the basketball. But Mumbai really put their foot on the gas towards the end of the first quarter led by an inspired comeback from Jagdeep Singh Bains. He put all his tricks on display, dazzling the crowd with some nifty post moves, decisive drives and finding his teammates for easy buckets. The play of the game was an and-1 up-and-under move by Bains that found the bottom of the basket from the other side of the rim. After building a double-digit lead, the rest of the Mumbai team helped to maintain the gap between the teams with forward Nikhil Kumar being aggressive and putting up 24 points. Haryana Gold struggled to contain the Mumbai offense and were forced into multiple turnovers, failing to establish a rhythm in the contest.

The game turned into a blowout with Mumbai Challengers taking the game 95-77. Mumbai coach PC Anthony, who has coached the junior boys and girls Indian teams, said “Our point guard switch from Prudhvi to Surender was one of the turning points of our game. Even our post players played well, and we managed to give them enough rest through multiple substitutions.” Regarding ex-international star Jagdeep Singh he said. “Jagdeep’s contribution is very high. Just his presence on the court has an impact similar to what Sachin Tendulkar has on a cricket field- it boosts the remaining players.”

Puducherry, 8th February 2016: Chhattisgarh girls and Madhya Pradesh boys crowned the 2016 Arise Steel 42nd Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship, It was a mixed fortune for Chhattisgarh in the final as their girls runner-up last year defeated Tamil Nadu 54-48 while the boys went down to defending champion Madhya Pradesh 59-64 .

Chhattisgarh-girls-teamChhattisgarh girls started the game with intent against Tamil Nadu, who looked sluggish in the first quarter. With decisive drives to the basket and open shots coming out of good ball movement, the Chhattisgarh girls built a 12-point lead with the score at 21-8 at the end of the first quarter. But Tamil Nadu was not going down without a fight, as they began to crawl their way back into the contest. Tamil Nadu centre Pavithra Sree led the charge yet again for her team as she poured in 16 points to go with a massive 19 rebounds. However, there was little contribution from her teammates as the only other double-digit scorer was M. Deepa with 10 points. The first quarter hurt Tamil Nadu for the rest of the game, as Chhattisgarh managed to score just about enough to keep Tamil Nadu at bay. Chhattisgarh’s Elizabeth Ekka, who is a possible MVP candidate, put in a game-high 24 points. Chhattisgarh also got contributions from Shweta and Neha who scored 13 and 10 points respectively. In the end, Tamil Nadu were unable to bridge the gap and Chhattisgarh won the game by 6 points 54-48. They went one better than last year to clinch the gold medal this time around.

The Chhattisgarh boys also made their way to the final of the tournament where they faced defending champions Madhya Pradesh boys today evening. Both teams went into the contest evenly matched with no clear favourite. The match lived up to its billing as it took an extra five minutes of play to decide the result. The first half belong to the Chhattisgarh boys as they outplayed the defending champions while building a double-digit lead. Madhya Pradesh managed to put up only 20 points in the first half and entered the second half down by 11 points. But MP switched gears in the second half as they fought their way back, cutting down the deficit one possession at a time. Chhattisgarh found it difficult to contain MP duo of Jeet Kharwar and Brijesh Tiwari as they put in 21 points and 19 rebounds respectively. Each of them had double-digit rebounds as well, with Jeet pulling down 16 rebounds, helping his team outrebound Chhattisgarh 53 to 38. As MP pulled back into the contest, Chhattisgarh fought to stay in the lead. Down two points with less than 30 seconds to go, Chhattisgarh equalised with just 10 seconds left on the clock. MP was unable to convert on the final possession of regular time and the game went into an extra five minutes. The MP boys held their composure in the extra time period and outscored Chhattisgarh by 5 points to close out the game at 64-59 and clinch gold for the second straight year.

The winning teams were awarded a cash prize of INR 50,000 each, while the runners-up were awarded INR 30,000 each. The third placed teams received a cash prize of INR 20,000 each.

Madhya-Pradesh-teamEarlier in the day, the fight for the bronze medal took place in the girls’ and boys’ categories.
